Learn to Skate

Lakes Area Hockey Association (LAHA) Learn to Skate (LTS) program provides a fun and structured way for skaters to be physically active and improve their skills. Participation in the program enables beginning skaters to learn basic skating skills for recreational enjoyment. 

The objectives of the program are to:

•   Teach children and adults the fundamentals of ice skating while building confidence and skills through each lesson.

•   Provide a progressive curriculum that ensures success from the first steps on the ice to the mastery of advanced skills.

•   Promote the health and fitness benefits of ice skating.

•   Equip each participant with the foundation necessary to reach his or her goal, be it recreational or competitive in nature.

Learn to Skate class registration includes:

•   New session every 8 weeks, 8-week sessions

•   One 30-min. class each week, free skate rental included.

•   8 Free Public Skating admissions for each skater to practice. This Public Session Pass can be used at your convenience on any weekend public session. This Pass is limited to 8 sessions and will expire at the end of the Learn to Skate semester. Skate rentals are not included during the public session. Skate rental is $3 per session if needed.

Fall Season 2025 (8-WEEKS)

Wednesday

•   October 22nd - December 17th (no class on 11/26)

•   Lesson time will be 5:15pm-5:45pm

•   $25.00

•   Registration opens Friday, August 1st around 10:00am



Saturday

•   October 18th - December 20th (no class on 11/8 & 11/29)

•   Lesson time will be 10:00am-10:30am

•   $25.00

•   Registration opens Friday, August 1st around 10:00am

Winter Season 2026 (8-WEEKS)

Wednesday

•   January 7th - March 4th (no class on 1/21)

•   Lesson time will be 5:15pm-5:45pm

•   $25.00

•   Registration opens Monday, November 24th around 10:00am


Sunday

•   January 11th - March 8th (no class on 1/25)

•   Lesson time will be 2:30pm-3:00pm

•   $25.00

•   Registration opens Monday, November 24th around 10:00am

Packages

$25 - 1 Learn to Skate Session Season (Wednesday or Saturday/Sunday) 

$35 - 2 Learn to Skate Sessions in the same Season (Wednesday and Saturday/Sunday)

LEARN TO SKATE USA REGISTRATION REQUIRED

Attention: All skaters must be registered with Learn-to-Skate USA, the cost is $17 per player plus a $1.50 processing and handling fee. Please click here to register with Learn-to-Skate USA. This registration is required for insurance purposes and is active for the entire 2024-2025 season.

Advancement Policy

Students will be continuously evaluated by coaches. Once a skater is deemed proficient, they may be invited to transition into the Jr. Mammoths Learn to play Hockey program.

Fundraising & Volunteer Policy

There are no fundraising or volunteer requirements for Learn to Skate participants or families.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What should my child wear and bring for class?

We suggest the following clothing for skaters:

•   Long pants

•   A long-sleeved shirt

•   A light jacket or coat

•   Thin socks (at least ankle-high)

•   A hockey or bike helmet (highly recommended)

Skate rental is included with your Learn to Skate registration, though you are welcome to bring your own skates.

Each participant will also receive a name tag at their first class, which should be worn at each session.


2. How old does my child need to be to participate in Learn to Skate?

Snowplow Sam: 3 years and older

Basic 1: 6 years and older


3. How do I know if my child is ready for the next level?

At the end of each series, your child will receive a progress report that indicates the level for which the instructor feels your child is ready. It may take more than one series to progress through some of the levels.


4. Are the classes divided by age?

Classes are divided by age for the beginning levels.

•   Snowplow Sam 1-4 is for ages 3-5.

•   Basic 1-8 is for ages 6-12.

•   Free Skate is for ages 6-15.
